Chris Gomez, a Chula Vista native, is brand communications and public affairs manager for New City America, the company credited with revitalizing San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood and now working on executing a similar vision in downtown Chula Vista
Sometimes, people get uncomfortable when they hear that there are plans to “revitalize” their neighborhood. What does that mean? What kinds of changes are coming? Will there be a bunch of people with little to no connection to the neighborhood guiding its evolution? The answer to that last question is simple and probably reassuring: no.
Chris Gomez is the brand communications and public affairs manager for New City America, the company known for its work in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood, and which has been hired to accomplish something similar in downtown Chula Vista.
Gomez, 42, lives in City Heights with his Husky, Oso, and also serves as district manager for Little Italy and New City America’s other clients. He took some time to talk about the current work and vision for Chula Vista’s downtown neighborhood, his memories of the city and its culture, and how surprised people seem to be when they find out he has plenty of rhythm.
With the revitalization that is already underway by the city — including new right-of-way improvements, lighting, landscaping and treescape plan — our mission will be to enhance those features with additional branded street furniture, a seasonal banner program celebrating the history of downtown Chula Vista, new and enhanced landscaping, public space activations with cultural events that represent the community, and promotion of the diverse businesses and community.
