Ahead of a Tuesday night community meeting, the city confirmed its intent to turn a vacant Brighton Park lot into a migrant 'base camp.'
As the migrant crisis grows, Mayor Brandon Johnson's office confirmed its intent to turn a Brighton Park lot into a camp for migrants in Chicago.The city said the green light hasn't yet been given in terms of the site's viability, though at this point, the signs are pointing in the right direction. And, if and once erected, the base camp could house at least 2,000 family members with children.
"If you look at New York right now, and the mayor saying that his city is falling apart, that this is going to destroy New York City, why are we not looking to them as an example?" said Jackie Zuniga. "What they need to build out are things like dining, living and then, one of the other important assets of these sites would be showering and bathrooms. And, in order for that to happen, they need to dig underground and figure out whether that's a viable site for that," said Ald. Julia Ramirez, who represents the 12th Ward.led her to being escorted away by police, Ramirez said she was not consulted prior to the city's selection of the privately-owned lot.
