People hug outside the site of the Buffalo, N.Y., massacre. There’s little reason to trust that lessons, caution or regret will be drawn from this latest act of orchestrated white supremacist violence. From the day we’re born, our lives are in the hands of others. Not just the doctors who bring us into this world and the families who raise us, but people we may never see or know.

And we trust that a night at the movies, a day in school, a morning in a house of worship or a Saturday afternoon in the grocery store won’t be violently interrupted by a gunman agitated by hate. Until the latest gunman shatters that trust, violating the sanctuaries of our public spaces.in a Buffalo, N.Y., supermarket he chose because it was in a predominantly Black neighborhood.

The shooter also reportedly denounced critical race theory, which is consistent with a Buffalo News story that the day before his rampage, the shooter talked for 90 minutes with a Black man named Grady Lewis on a wide range of topics. Lewis said the young man said that critical race theory “teaches that all whites are violent.”

Critical race theory is used to avoid candid discussions about American history and race, and about how the powerful repercussions of racism still rock this land, as it did, again, in Buffalo.
