If Claudio Castagnoli is able to defeat Chris Jericho and become a two-time Ring of Honor world champion, it would make him the face of the promotion.
For Claudio Castagnoli, it’s a matter of trust.
This is somewhat uncharted waters for the 41-year-old Castagnoli, who won the first world title of his career when he defeated Jonathan Gresham for the ROH belt at Death Before Dishonor in June. To him, being the Ring of Honor world champion has special meaning because it was “always for the best wrestler” and those who had “honed their craft and needed a place to shine and let the world know how good they are.
“The worst part would probably be being around Daddy Magic [Matt Menard] for so long, just hearing him yap on and yap on and yap on,” Castagnoli said. “And [Jake] Hager’s [purple] hat. Just, oh God, please, please no. I need to have a great day Saturday.” “It just feels like the Ring of Honor world championship was not presented and treated with the honor it deserves and I would like to be the one to restore honor to the Ring of Honor world championship,” Castagnoli said. “I will say Chris definitely did his thing. That’s what Chris Jericho does.”
“I have a huge amount of respect for those guys and they have always walked their own path very successfully,” Castagnoli said. “He has been helping out talent by going in early and doing training sessions and stuff,” he said. “Everybody who took advantage of that I think that definitely grew a lot.”
