The region will eventually get 3,000 to 4,000 refugees but many will return to help a devastated Ukraine rebuild, estimates Global Cleveland President Joe Cimperman.
Women and children, fleeing from Ukraine, sleep at a makeshift shelter in the train station in Przemysl, Poland, Thursday, March 3, 2022. More than 1 million people have fled Ukraine following Russia's invasion in the swiftest refugee exodus in this century, the United Nations said Thursday. WASHINGTON, D. C.
Cimperman says it is too early to know how many refugees will come to Cleveland as a result of Biden’s announcement. Much depends on how easy it is for them to get visas, the terms of those visas, and whether the United States will accept Ukrainians who intend to return to their homeland when fighting abates rather than focusing on those who want to stay permanently.
The White House announced Thursday that in addition to being willing to take in 100,000 Ukrainians, the United States is prepared to provide more than $1 billion in humanitarian assistance for those affected by the war in Ukraine. The funding will provide food, shelter, clean water, medical supplies and other forms of aid.
The official said not everyone who enters the U.S. from Ukraine under this program would come in as refugees and said some could use immigrant or non-immigrant visas. Those who enter as refugees would count against the nation’s 125,000 cap for the number of refugees it will admit in the 2022 fiscal year. The official said the commitment to take 100,000 people from Ukraine “is not necessarily timebound to that fiscal year; it’s a broader commitment.
“The current system for handling asylum claims at our borders has long needed repair,”said a statement from DHS Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas. “Through this rule, we are building a more functional and sensible asylum system to ensure that individuals who are eligible will receive protection more swiftly, while those who are not eligible will be rapidly removed. We will process claims for asylum or other humanitarian protection in a timely and efficient manner while ensuring due process.
