17-year-old fighters Herrera, Torres throw caution, defense to the wind in thrilling bout
Aeneas Gonzales throws a punch during the third round of his fight against Alejandro Pena during the Golden Glove Championship at Second Baptist Church on Saturday.Perhaps it was their youth, their fighting styles or the fact that they represented two of the oldest gyms in the city that the crowd appreciated.
For three, 2-minute rounds, they stood toe-to-toe, firing punches in heavy bunches, forcing two standing-eight counts apiece and bringing the crowd at the Second Baptist Church Community Center to its feet. “I tried to treat it like just another day of sparring,” said Herrera, a senior at Judson High school. “I felt good.”
In other bouts, two-time national amateur champion David Cardenas of Pure Technik Boxing claimed a 3-0 victory over Robert Morales of BNF BoXing’s Finest Promotions in the men’s senior open division at 112 pounds. Box Beat Gym’s Aden Jacks, the defending regional and state heavyweight champion, won his first bout at super heavyweight with a dominating 3-0 victory over Roberto Garcia of Where’s the Fight Boxing Club in Converse.
