Houston doomed by cold shooting in regional final loss to Villanova
During a late timeout Saturday, Kelvin Sampson looked at his University of Houston players sitting in the huddle.All game, the Cougars waited for shots to start going in.They waited for Kyler Edwards, Fabian White Jr. and Josh Carlton — key contributors to another deep NCAA Tournament run — to deliver a spark.
“Teams that cry care,” Sampson said. “There’s a lot of tears in that locker room, coaches and players. This team has been through a lot this year. I knew it was going to take a good team to beat us, and a good team did.” “If you told me before the game that we were going to hold them to 29 percent from the field, they were going to shoot 24 percent from the 3-point line and we lose, I wouldn’t have believed you,” Sampson said. “Our kids guarded. Man, did we guard. Our defense was spot-on.”“Just missing a lot of open shots,” said White, who wrapped up his five-year career as the winningest player in program history with 121 victories. “We missed layups. We missed free throws. It bit us in the end.
From there, the Cougars missed their last five shots, including all four 3-point attempts in the final seconds.
