To improve student success, start by transforming introductory college courses
... [+]Introductory college classes—sometimes referred to as gateway courses—have long been recognized as a major stumbling block to student retention and completion. For tens of thousands of students, they get college off to a bad beginning rather than to a fast start.
In year one, a steering committee is formed as institutions engage in a self-study that identifies the courses to be modified and the conditions necessary for change. Surveys of student learning and inventories of course analytics are completed. Faculty attend a Teaching and Learning Academy that trains them in the use of active learning techniques instead of lectures, the default teaching option in most large introductory courses. By the end of this first year, an Action Plan is developed.
