Written in collaboration with people formerly incarcerated at the Sing Sing, the story of a theatrical prison troupe finds deep beauty in an effort to make art for art’s sake.

has reason to believe he’ll automatically get the role of Hamlet. He’s a founding member of the Sing Sing Prison’s branch of Rehabilitation Through the Arts , the theater troupe where he’s often writing the scripts in addition to playing the most plum roles.

Outside of the rehearsals, Divine G is the story’s focus, coping with his envy over losing the role of Hamlet while building a tenuous friendship with Divine Eye. Domingo is generous in sharing the screen with the non-professional actors but he is undeniably magnetic, both in discursive conversations with his close friend Mike Mike and in many quieter moments, particularly as G prepares for an upcoming clemency hearing and allows himself a shred of hope.

Instead, the differences between Divine G and Divine Eye eventually pull them together, united in their fierce desire to see the world outside but also the commitment to the work they’re making together within those walls. The silliness of their production becomes beautiful because of the work they put in, the handmade costumes and mishmashed characters expressing the troupe’s personality far better than a straightforward adaptation of Shakespeare.
