The countdown continues to the total solar eclipse, and many agencies and communities are preparing for this celestial event including Columbus Public Health.

Leslie DiDonato from the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response explained how they are preparing. "Last Friday, we held a tabletop exercise with our healthcare partners here at Columbus Public Health about the eclipse to talk about how they would manage the potential surge in medical events happening in or outside the line of totality and how they would transport to the nearest hospital systems," DiDonato said. "It did sound like Mount Carmel's going to be deploying a mobile medical unit to Hardin County for a few days to act as a field first aid station.

"Our entire region will be working together on creating and communicating all those like-minded messages together and encouraging eye safety in the viewing of the eclipse," she said. "We're making sure we encourage the use of glasses and directing people to where they can acquire safe viewing glasses. Columbus libraries are going to have some, and some of the schools are going to hand out glasses as well.
