NJ/NY Gotham FC taps into popularity U.S. national team star, perhaps contributing to club-record ticket sales.

Against NJ/NY Gotham FC last year, the Wave star rang up six goals total in a pair of lopsided victories. Choosing not to hold it against Morgan, the East Coast club decided to tap into her popularity ahead of Sunday’s return visit.Advertisement

The Wave know how they lucky were to attract Morgan when they launched the franchise. Now they’re reaping a Women’s World Cup dividend. Their matches enable U.S. fans to see Morgan and other national team players such as Wave defender Naomi Girma before they head to Australia and New Zealand next month.

Americans in large numbers will tune in. The 2015 World Cup Final, played in Canada, drew 25.4 million viewers in the United States, per Fox Sports. Approximately 14.3 million U.S. viewers tuned into the 2019 World Cup Final telecast from France, as compared to 11.4 million for the 2018 men’s World Cup Final.
