Six months ago, Ivan Chaban, 15, was walking with his family back to their village of Chaplyschci in eastern Ukraine near the Russian border carrying much needed groceries following the invasion of Russian troops.

“It melts our hearts to see Ivan, a 16-year-old young man, being so strong and optimistic after such a horrible tragedy,” the Right to Walk Foundation posted on itsaccount. It has underwritten the bulk of the funding for the rehab care of Ivan and worked with other refugees.

Last Saturday, they attended an invasion protest and rally in Balboa Park organized by the House of Ukraine, which welcomes donations to help with Ivan’s ongoing care and living expenses. The contact email is: HouseofUkraine@gmail.com. He was awed by the warm reception from passersby and airline personnel at the San Diego International Airport when the two visitors arrived from Ukraine a couple of weeks ago. The House of Ukraine had organized a welcoming group who held signs, banners and a Ukrainian flag.

Amputees come from all over the world come to see Peter Harsch, who years ago spearheaded the Naval Medical Center’s comprehensive combat and complex casualty care unit that treats injured Army, Marine and Navy troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. He also worked with blast patients at the Walter Reed military medical center in Bethesda, Md.

“Ivan is a very optimistic person,” Kernytskyy says. “I did not expect to see such progress in such a short period of time.”
