Ted Slowik writes: In the before times, how a man treated women might have mattered in elections. Voters may have considered allegations of domestic abuse in deciding whether someone was fit to hold office. None of that seems to matter anymore.
State Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Frankfort, addresses a town hall audience in 2020 at the New Lenox Public Library.
None of that seems to matter anymore. If it did, Walker would not be the Republican nominee seeking to represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate and Trump would not remain an influential leader of the GOP. Both are accused of serious misconduct involving women.in a lawsuit filed by E. Jean Carroll, a magazine columnist who said Trump raped her in a department store dressing room.
Walker’s conduct should be disqualifying, and yet, it is not. He remains a viable candidate fully supported by his party. It’s up to voters to decide next week whether he will serve in the Senate. A journalist today cannot hold a mirror to America and objectively conclude this is the same society that forced a disgraced Jack Ryan from politics in 2004. Ryan won the Republican primary that year to represent Illinois in the U.S. Senate. But three months later, he withdrew his candidacy in shame.
But the press could argue that in cases involving candidates for elected office, the public’s right to know trumps consideration of the privacy for the parties involved in divorce and child custody proceedings. We used to think how a person behaved as a spouse or a parent would affect voter decisions about whether someone would make a suitable public servant.Former President Donald Trump pauses while speaking at a rally Oct. 8, 2022,at the Minden Tahoe Airport in Minden, Nevada.
