District 131 officials are pushing forward with what is being described as an “unprecedented” pet therapy pilot program that aims to eventually put a dog in all 22 district schools.

Third-graders at Aries “Jaybird” Gonzales Child Center in Aurora enjoy some classroom time with Vuolo.

Vuolo and her handler Marcia Perrin have obviously proven their worth since the duo began a three-day-a-week schedule in the K-5 classrooms of the “Adventures” program that started in September of 2021 at the Aries Gonzales Child Center. An East Aurora School District third-grader learning about Venn diagrams gets a little extra attention from Vuolo during class on Wednesday.

There was “a lot of frustration,” which quickly dissipated as the children were able to pet, hug and nuzzle their furry brown helper while also listening to McKenzie introduce this mathematical concept, she said. That student now not only gladly comes to school but is interacting with others in the classroom, lunchroom and on the playground, none of which would have happened had it not been for the dog, the principal insisted.Vuolo has also been known to cuddle up next to a child under a table who is having trouble adjusting to other classmates. And “seeing a student on an iPad with an arm around her,” added Steinbecher, is an everyday occurrence.

No one has seen the dog’s influence more closely than her handler, Marcia Perrin of New Lenox, who, through Healing Hearts Comfort Dogs, trained with Vuolo every week for almost two years. Vuolo has also been part of airport celebrations when Honor Flight veterans return from their trips to Washington, D.C. But according to Perrin, “she’s really in her element” when interacting with kids.“She is excited when we leave the house and I say ‘let’s go to school.’“ And there really is a decided “hop” to Vuolo’s step as she walks from the car into the building, Perrin insisted.
