A chance Christmas encounter leaves a lasting memory.
A chance encounter with a Santa Claus-like figure downtown led to a chat about poinsettias and a lasting memory of grace.A few years ago during Christmas week, I was at the River Walk absorbing the lights, waiting for friends visiting from New York for the holidays.
So I decided to enjoy the scenery with sauntering tourists when this scraggily, bearded old man appeared from the side, startling me.“Oopsie, there,” he said. “Didn’t mean to surprise you like that. Could I trouble you for a second?” We ambled toward a cluster of bistros, outside bars and restaurants, and sat down at a sidewalk table to watch passing river barges bustling with tourists who snapped pictures of singing mariachis. The old man waved and imitated St. Nick with a hearty “Ho! Ho! Ho!”“This is a nice treat, my friend. I didn’t get your name,” the old man said. The strolling musicians passed, and the old man said, “Glad to meet ya, fella. The name’s Harry Poinsett.
