Commentary: We can all do something as simple as driving the speed limit or bicycling and walking more to help clean the air.

• Adjust your home thermostat a few degrees higher during the day.• Postpone landscaping or using small gasoline engines until after 6 p.m., the city of San Antonio cites the transportation sector as accounting for 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, and national data shows light-duty cars and trucks representing the majority of that sector. AACOG modeling also suggests transportation emission sources are the largest contributor to ozone in our region.

By altering driving patterns to reduce emissions, we may be able to improve our ozone levels and help mitigate our contribution to climate change. As Bexar County reckons with being bumped up to moderate ozone nonattainment, this is more important than ever. Strict regulations intended to reduce ozone precursor emissions will soon be put in place, including a required emissions inspection for all gas-powered vehicles 2 to 24 years old, and a mandated 15 percent countywide reduction in volatile organic compounds by the end of next year.

To get these regulations lifted, we have to improve our air quality, and that will require a massive, long-term, cooperative effort across multiple economic sectors and agencies, and from area residents. Lyle Hufstetler is the natural resources project administrator at the Alamo Area Council of Governments.
