To address one safety concern on the Salado Creek Greenway, officials put an abrasive material over this Boardwalk section to make it less slippery. Improvements are coming to a dangerous crossing.As a regular user of the city’s greenway trails for the past 16 years, a recent tragic accident caused me to reflect on how the partnership between the users of the trails and the city of San Antonio can ensure the safety of all as they use these assets.
Input from the public is always appreciated. For instance, a section of the trail from Wetmore Road to Lady Bird Park crosses a wetlands area and is called the Boardwalk. This part of the trail is on a pier system and is a little elevated so it is above the water level. When it opened, just a little bit of dew in the morning would make this section extremely slippery.
This crossing is well-known to me and others who ride to and from the Tobin Park Trailhead. While there are many signs that say to dismount and walk your bike, often cyclists do not. Coming from Tobin , you almost have to get out into the street to see if any cars are coming down the hill. This is unfortunate, but there is no way around this.
