So-called “school choice” would destroy public education and leave the students with the greatest needs in public schools with limited resources.

, 70 to 80 percent of students receiving a voucher were already in private school before taxpayers picked up the tab. In New Hampshire, 9 out of 10 students receiving vouchers were already in private school settings.

Students in urban districts whose parents can’t afford private school tuition exceeding the amount provided by a voucher would also pay a price. According to thereleased March 24, the nation's average cost of K-12 private school tuition is $23,839. The $8,000 promised in Senate Bill 8 wouldn’t come close to covering the tuition. That doesn’t even address the cost and hassle of transportation to a private school without busing.

With a voucher program, the most vulnerable of our students will get left behind. Is that the future we find acceptable? Is that the Texas our kids deserve?
