The Protect Reporters from Exploitative State Spying Act is short and straightforward. It prohibits any federal agency from compelling a journalist to release confidential information related to sources or research. Importantly, it prevents the same agencies from demanding information from third parties who have a reporter’s records, such as telecommunication companies.The bill includes narrow exemptions for terrorism or imminent violence — including offenses against minors.
