Relatives and friends lay flowers on coffins during a funeral ceremony for Tetiana Androsovych, 60, and Mykola Androsovych, 63, at a graveyard in the village of Hroza, near Kharkiv, Ukraine, Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023. The Ukrainian village of Hroza has been plunged into mourning by a Russian rocket strike on a village store and cafe that killed more than 50 people, including the Androsovyches, on Thursday, Oct. 5.Distressing political dysfunction in the U.S.

Nothing can hearten the Russian dictator more than elected officials in the United States showing signs of going wobbly on financial, military and political solidarity with Ukraine, a nation that has shed blood in its defense against an unprovoked attack on its sovereignty. The lack of a speaker in Washington has also complicated the United States’ response to Hamas’ brutal terrorist attack on Israel.

Our internecine fights in Congress are the most visible and prominent, but toxic politics is weakening American government at every level. Our own Texas House and Senate leaders, both members of the GOP, spend their days in a public war with each other. These fights are a distraction as the world around us burns.

Ukraine and those who cherish freedom have no option but to resist as Putin’s brutality endeavors to reduce to rubble Ukraine’s past, present and perhaps future. Ukraine knows better what Putin’s Russia is capable of than a crew of unserious politicians in the House who see Ukraine as a bargaining chip rather than a human rights principle to be defended.Ukraine will not quit, Russian aggression should not be rewarded, and our petty political impairments and hubris shouldn’t doom Ukraine..
