For staff on the coronavirus-stricken cruise ship, nearly everyone’s job changed once passengers were confined to cabins. “It doesn’t matter if you were washing dishes or if you were in the captain’s deck.”
TOKYO—When the Diamond Princess wrapped up its two-week cruise and sailed back into Yokohama on Feb. 3, three helicopters circled above and Japanese health officials climbed on board. Capt. Gennaro Arma, the 44-year-old Italian at the helm, says he realized the novel coronavirus outbreak meant the ship was no longer fully his to command.
“We all realized straight away that for everybody’s sake we had to follow the Japanese quarantine officials’ rules and protocols,” Capt. Arma said.
