Racers prepare for the solstice race during the last Couch to 10K meeting of 2023.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The last official meeting for the Couch to 10K program helped prepare those who anticipate racing in the 2023, Midnight Sun Run.
For over two months, the program has been training both new and returning racers. Meetings included running sections of the course, warm up practices, guest trainers and tips for tackling the oddly timed event. For the last meeting, attendee’s ran a 4.5 mile loop and those that had stuck with the program the whole time received free entry into the race.
“When we started Couch to 10k this year there was still a ton of snow on the ground,” she said, referring to the late spring breakup. “We were running in slush and snow, but we start out every April and we meet twice a week.” To start out, the workouts are only 30 minutes long with an increase of five minutes every week. Once the workouts reach an hour in duration, it’s up to the participants to increase the intensity.
