Could 2020 be the year when women are allowed to be visibly angry and still succeed? Senator Warren's outspoken debate performance might be a signal that it's time to retire the negative backlash against strategically angry women.

Senator Warren’s pointed critique of her rivals in the Democratic primary displays a very strategic use of anger, but at what cost? I also wondered if Senator Warren’s visible anger would have any impact on the communication choices women could make in corporate spaces? Even if Senator Warren does not become the Democratic nominee, could her honest communication permanently change how women are receive when being direct and, frankly, angry in public.

Those challenges are what fuels Senator Warren’s ire, and she was very specific about it during the debate. “She wielded that anger, and what that anger served,” said Cate Gormley, Vice President at Lake Research Partners, which is a Democratic polling firm. Gormley also noted that “Warren effectively conveyed that it is the American people who have been wronged, not her personally.” Chris Jahnke agrees that precision in how women display their anger matters.

This is certainly true when it comes to women of color. The penalty is still very high for black women, where even the perception of expressing negative emotions can carry harm. Raquel Eatmon is an executive coach and former news anchor who told me that avoiding certain stereotypes around being an “angry black woman” was nearly impossible for her during her career as a journalist. “There was never a right way to speak my displeasure or stand up for myself,” Eatmon said.
