It all comes down to a dispute over books.

If even authors themselves appear to be backing away from the battle, why are publishers continuing the suit—and what could it really mean for the internet and its most comprehensive archive?

In controlled digital lending, a library scans each individual page of a physical book that it already owns, uploads a digital copy, and generally allows one patron to check it out for a period of time, according to two members of the Authors Alliance, Rachel Brooke and Dave Hansen.
