That includes the 42.4 percent of U.S. adults who are considered obese, and those with other relatively common conditions like diabetes and moderate to severe asthma. “I think, from a public health perspective, there’s a clear need in some situations for individuals to receive a different vaccine,” said Amanda Cohn, the CDC’s representative to the FDA advisory committee.For most people under 65 or so, available data suggests that vaccines still provide strong protection against severe illness and death. Some studies show they’ve become less effective over time at preventing mild or moderate infections.

“It is more gut feeling rather than based on really truly serious data,” he said, adding: “The data itself is not strong, but it is certainly going in a direction that is supportive of this.”
