About 80 per cent of eligible Sask. residents had received two or more doses of a COVID\u002D19 vaccine as of March 5, among the lowest in Canada.

The provincial government’s weekly epidemiology report said the number of people in hospital with the virus has dropped — but only slightly. Doctors remain concerned about a long, sustained peak of infections weighing down the acute care system.

In emergency rooms, the weekly rate of COVID-19 admissions was 38.1 per 1,000 in the week of Feb. 27 to Mar. 5, according to data submitted from seven of the province’s 13 service areas. That’s a slight increase from the 37.6 per 1,000 recorded the previous week. Provincial medicine head Dr. Haissam Haddad said current pressures are coupled with a general rise in hospital demand. The result is that big tertiary centres in Regina and Saskatoon are running well above capacity. He said he’s concerned for the safety of staff, given their high workloads.

Saskatchewan no longer reports daily COVID-19 case counts. Hospitalizations and data provided in this week’s report are mostly for the dates of Feb. 27 to March 5, inclusive.
