Illinois reported 1,798 new COVID cases and 34 related deaths Tuesday as the statewide test positivity creeped up to 2.0%.

Dr. Michael Hoffman, with Cook County Health, talks about the decision to authorize a second booster shot for some adults.Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported testing 39,447 new specimens for a total of 57,594,203 since the pandemic began. As of Monday night, 546 patients in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 76 patients were in the ICU, and 26 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

The BA.2 sub variant doubles every seven days and is 30-50% more contagious than its original strain. Unlike the omicron wave, the city is not seeing long testing lines. "A lot people are protected from getting BA.2 because of those existing antibodies of BA.1," said Hannah Barbian, a virologist and epidemiologist at Rush University Medical Center.
