As the winter respiratory illness season fast approaches, this is the first year that four vaccines are being recommended during pregnancy. Yet, there are already signs that fewer pregnant women are getting vaccinated — putting themselves and their newborns at increased risk of severe illness or death. 'We are meeting more resistance than I ever remember,' said Dr. Neil Silverman, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at UCLA Health.
Sarah Pachtman, a maternal/fetal physician at Northwell Health's Katz Women's Hospital of Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York. 'We've had so much practice,' she said, adding that she's encountered less vaccine hesitancy this year compared to before the pandemic. 'I noticed myself spending more time counseling patients,' she said. 'That helps decrease their hesitancy.
