The former Soviet leader died this week, but retired ad exec Tom Darbyshire says the ad Gorbachev starred in holds up after 25 years.
“They immediately saw the possibilities,” said Darbyshire, a New York resident and retired BBDO executive.
“On occasions throughout the past 15 years, this is a source of interest and I get a lot of calls,” Darbyshire said. “Then, it goes dormant again. This is probably the last gasp, I suspect.” “Because of him, we have freedom,” a young man tells Gorbachev’s critic. An older female sympathizer gets in the last word: “Because of him we have many things, like Pizza Hut!” This prompts others to raise a slice to chants of “Hail to Gorbachev!”
“Pizza, in this case, plays the role of that catalyst that takes a disagreement and gives people a meeting of the minds to agree about this one thing: ‘We like having pizza, so here’s to you, Gorbachev,’” Darbyshire said.Gorbachev, who was on the outs with current Soviet president Boris Yeltsin, said at the time he would give 100 percent of his undisclosed fee to help pay for his foundation’s perestroika library and archive.
