The government now argues another plan that predates Vermette\u0027s bill meets all the requirements of a suicide prevention strategy.
NDP MLA Doyle Vermette said the government failed to consult families and stakeholders affected by suicide and has shown no sign it’s working on a new strategy to address an issue that claims hundreds of lives in the province each year.
The StarPhoenix twice requested an interview with Mental Health and Addictions Minister Everett Hindley and was told he was unavailable. Vermette said he began to worry when families who had visited the legislature did not hear from the government. He said he asked the government who was consulted in the six-month window but was rebuffed.
The ministry said it also consulted the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations. The province and FSIN signed a separate agreement with the federal government in 2020, pledging in principle to work to reduce the toll suicide takes on First Nations communities.Article content
