San Diego’s South Bay is home to about 450,000 people, but it’s not home to a public four-year university. However, efforts to improve higher education options in South County are starting to take shape, with CSU and UC schools getting on board.

He told KPBS the proposal for the east Chula Vista site considers the greater needs of a university campus. “Some campuses have huge room to grow. Others are going to grow in ways of creating satellite campuses, using opportunistic spaces, partnerships with community college campuses,” she said.“Some might not have a car, some may not be able to afford the gas, some might not be able to afford the parking permit,” he said.Stairs lead up to the Learning Rescource Center and Library at Southwestern College's Chula vista campus, Jan. 5, 2023.
“We have way too many students that are qualified that can't get in,” said UC Board of Regents chair Richard Leib.“We want to be able to provide education and access to those [students] because we know when someone goes to a University of California, they come out in a much better position,” Leib said.Houses in Chula Vista's Millenia community are built next to roads leading to the proposed site for a university and technology park, Jan. 5 ,2023.
