There was a time when the Republican Party stood firmly in support of fledgling democracies.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy recently threatened to cut aid to the Ukrainian war effort if the Republicans gained the majority in the 2022 midterm elections. There was a time when the Republican Party stood firmly in support of fledgling democracies and resisted authoritarian aggression. This is no longer the case with MAGA Republicans who now gravitate toward autocrats like Russia’s Putin and Hungary’s Orban. McCarthy’s threat is an example of the disturbing trend toward authoritarianism already evident by the Party’s support of Trump and his attempted insurrection. It is a warning to voters who would preserve democratic principles to vote Democratic in the November elections. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
