Highs: Mid- to upper 90s.Today could be the hottest day of this record-setting September heat wave that started Sunday. We’ve got a shot at reaching 100 degrees today, which would be the first 100-degree day in the nation’s capital since 2016 and the first 100-degree September day since 1980, although we could fall a degree short like yesterday.

A cold front brings a daily chance of showers and storms starting Thursday.The extreme heat doesn’t let up today with mostly sunny skies as temperatures climb again toward highs around 95 to 100. With moderate to high humidity , the afternoon heat index should reach 100 to 105. Washington’s record high for the date — 104 in 1881 — is probably out of reach, but Dulles International Airport could break its record high of 95 from 1985.
