The 71-year-old small chain is slashing prices by 40% to clear out its store shelves.

It was founded in 1951 by Kenny Asel, who was later joined by his brother Herb. The brothers started the business after serving in World War II.

In 1951, the first Dallas location opened its doors but the founders sold it to a group of investors in 1973 due to health reasons. After the business continued to grow, the investors sold their shares back to the company. In 1987, an employee stock ownership plan trust formed to make Asel Art Supply an employee-owned business..
