Dallas bulk trash rules needed change, but we still don’t have it right | Editorial
tug at our heartstrings. The 60-year-old Singing Hills resident was stung with a $1,039 addition to her city utility bill because workers who took down a dead tree in her yard had placed a massive pile of brush on her curb for city collection.
As we wrote then, Dallas residents enjoyed an almost unheard of luxury that was costing the city more than it could afford to pay. Had the council not limited bulk trash collection, that cost would have been passed on to all Dallas residents that pay for sanitation pickup. The monthly cost shared by all would have mainly benefitted a relatively small number of residents who persistently place huge amounts of bulk trash on the curb.As City Hall reporter Everton Bailey Jr.
We’ve seen similar situations around Dallas, especially as it relates to tree limbs and trunks. City officials have good reason to worry about the amount of personal trash people set on the curb, from sofas to refrigerators to just plain junk that’s piled up. We don’t want to go back to the days of set-it-on-the-curb-and-forget-it. That cost the city more than $22 million a year.
