Under the proposal, councilmember salaries would jump from $60,000 to $125,000 and $145,000 for the mayor. Most councilmembers who weighed in pointed out that the elected position is essentially a full-time job.

Voters in Dallas may be asked if they want to give their council members a pay raise — and a significant one at that. The Dallas City Council on Wednesday debated a recommendation to change the pay structure through a charter amendment, which would require voter approval.Council members currently make $60,000 a year. They have not gotten a raise since 2014.The way the proposal currently stands, council members would double their salary.

""I also don't see the voters saying, ‘You're going to get double the money,’" said Councilmember Omar Narvaez.Councilmember Kathy Stewart proposed a more moderate increase in line with the consumer price index."It's $78,973.78, which is more easily rounded up to $80,000," she said.Councilman Paul Ridley opposed any raise in part due to the fact that the acting city manager has asked all department heads to cut their budgets by 6%.
