Quantum of Solace might have been the weakest of Daniel Craig's James Bond movies but it could have boasted the best twist in the entire spy series.

While 2008’s under-written Quantum of Solace is arguably one of the worst James Bond movies, the Daniel Craig vehicle did boast one of the franchise’s best premises. The critical failure of Quantum of Solace is a testament to the power of workers’ strikes. 2008’s addition to the James Bond franchise arrived with plenty of goodwill from both franchise fans and reviewers since 2006’s Casino Royale was a smart, original, and fresh take on 007.

Quantum of Solace’s Story Wasted Its Bond Vs MI6 Idea Quantum of Solace’s plot is one of the only James Bond franchise outings to pit 007 against MI6 and the CIA. One thing that the Bourne series always had on Bond was its subversive, paranoid atmosphere. Jason Bourne could trust no one since his former employer the CIA was the villain of his story. This twist made Bourne’s story feel innovative after 9/11 and left Bond’s familiar MI6 colleagues Q, M, and Miss Moneypenny feeling dated.

The rebelliousness and darkness of a James Bond movie that pits 007 himself against his employers fit Craig’s grittier version of the character perfectly. However, since Quantum of Solace never made is clear whether the movie’s main villains are MI6 as a whole, this twist never makes much of an impact. There are other villains involved in the conspiracy and some vital characters like M herself and Felix Leiter aren’t in on the nefarious plot.
