Darius Garland just can't catch a break this season.
Nonetheless, the Cavs left Denver’s Ball Arena unsure if Garland is feeling worse -- and whether there’s something else they can use for added safety since Garland doesn’t like the “annoying” wrap.
“He’s out there taking a beating,” Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “He kept fighting. We’re gonna have to figure something out as a way to protect it. But I don’t know if you can. It’s tough the way he plays and the way he’s defended. People are handsy and they do a lot of swiping at the ball trying to get steals, not in a malicious way by any means, I’m not trying to say that, but his hands are involved in a lot of the plays. I thought he got through it. He’s a tough kid.
Garland missed seven of his first nine shots, admitting that both the sore thumb and uncomfortable wrap had a role in the frigid start. He couldn’t play with the same freedom and peace of mind. He didn’t have the same control of his handle. There wasn’t the usual aggressiveness. But he picked it up in the second half, finishing with 21 points, 14 of which came in the final two quarters, on 8 of 20 shooting and just 1 of 6 from 3-point range to go with eight assists against one turnover in 33 gutsy minutes.
“I don’t think it was handicapping him,” Bickerstaff said. “But I do think as the game went on, and he was getting chopped and hit more, there was a little bit of irritant. Anything that you’re recovering from, think about getting hit, it’s gonna be a pain thing. We will make sure that it’s not something that can get worse.
