Elsa was kept prisoner using some special shackles in the first Frozen movie, and a disturbing theory could explain where they had come from.

The first Frozen movie showed Elsa held prisoner by a unique pair of shackles, and a dark theory would explain where they had come from. The Frozen franchise has shown the queen of Arendelle slowly overcoming her fear of her powers in a beautiful display of self-acceptance. Of course, she only had this fear to begin with because of her parents, who had taught her that she needed to conceal her true self to stay safe.

Elsa’s Parents Forged Special Shackles Before Frozen After Hans traveled into the mountains to confront Elsa, he brought her back to the palace in Arendelle and chained her up in a tower. The shackles he used looked nothing like the typical wrings of iron that would be used to restrain a prisoner. Instead, they entirely encased her hands.

This could make sense, considering Elsa wasn't the least bit surprised by the shackles. There was no moment that she stopped and wondered why they might have been there, so it could be because she already knew of and had approved them. With her parents gone, she might have felt there was no one left to stop her and therefore ordered that if she got out of control, the castle staff chain her up and throw away the key.

Ultimately, the major theme of the Frozen movie is how easily fear can get out of control. In the case of Elsa, she had been perfectly capable of controlling her powers before her accident with Anna. She effortlessly turned the ballroom into a winter wonderland, and in Frozen 2, she made an entire little enchanted forest in her and Anna's bedroom. It was only once she became afraid that she couldn't control it—and that all came down to the poor decisions of her parents.
