Data learns of a certain detective in season 1.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Lt. Commander Data first channels his best holodeck alter ego in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1. TNG season 1 may be the show's weakest season, but the lovable android Data provides some great moments throughout. Over the course of TNG, the positronic android Data seeks to learn what it means to be human by consuming human media and trying out various human hobbies.

In TNG season 1, episode 7, "Lonely Among Us," Captain Picard introduces Data to a human literary figure who will have a significant impact on Data's journey to be human: Sherlock Holmes. As the Enterprise crew members work to figure out why the ship keeps malfunctioning, Picard remarks that "the immortal Sherlock Holmes would have an interesting view of our mystery, I believe.

Data's nature as an android allows him to gain a comprehensive understanding of every Holmes story in a matter of minutes. Much like a person with autism or another form of neurodivergence, Data dives head first into the mythos of Sherlock Holmes, quickly embracing it to the point of obsession. Data continues referencing Holmes throughout TNG season 1, episode 7 much to the amusement of his friends and crew members.

What Sherlock Holmes Means For Data's Quest To Become Human Data seems to find a kindred spirit in Sherlock Holmes, perhaps because of Holmes' often emotionless devotion to logic, reason, and uncovering the truth. Data's obsession with Holmes will only grow throughout TNG, and he will eventually don a full Sherlock costume for a holodeck adventure in TNG season 2, episode 3, "Elementary, Dear Data." Accompanied by Lt. Geordi La Forge as his Dr.

Throughout TNG, Data uses literature from humanity's past to gain a greater understanding of what it means to be human. He performs Shakespeare with Captain Picard and goes on holodeck adventures with Geordi as a way to playact the emotions he longs to actually feel. Data's love of Sherlock Holmes and his identification with Holmes as a character are just some of the many things that make Data far more human than he realizes.
