What I saw sickened me.
I’ve also been considering banning our kids from associating with theirs, but I’m not sure how to enforce that since they go to school together. The problem is that Pam especially keeps asking why she can’t go back to “Uncle Adam and Aunt Belinda’s” house anymore, and why we suddenly hate them. I’m not sure how to tell her in terms that she can understand, and I don’t want to frighten her with the notion that someone can appear to be a good person but is secretly a disgusting pervert.
You may disagree with me here, but you owe it to your friends and your kids to be clear on what your concerns are. If I were you, I would ask to speak to your neighbors and mention how your daughter started reading that book and how disgusted you were by it. Most likely, they will apologize for leaving the book in a place that is accessible to children, and will probably also explain why they have the book in the first place.
Based on your decision after speaking with the neighbors, you’ll have to talk to your kids. Maybe you’ll determine Adam and Belinda deserve a second-chance, or maybe you want to continue to keep your distance, but either way, you have to tell your kids. The whole “because I said so” routine isn’t going to cut it.
