It was the first all-star tournament for the 10-and-under age group as many leagues tried out their players against other leagues
Deer Park shortstop Jace Moore reacts to the umpire's call that a La Porte runner is safe during a steal attempt at Pecan Park Monday night. Both teams had the green light to pilfer bases and steal they did, collecting over a dozen.LA PORTE - The toads and turtles found in the watery marshes by Pecan Park's youth baseball fields escaped the Mustang Directors Tournament this past weekend without any headaches.
La Porte spoiled an all-Deer Park championship game when it defeated the Deer Park 9s in a 6 p.m. loser's bracket contest, but it failed to spoil the Deer Park 10s' perfect record for the four-day tournament. Head coach Arthur Sauceda's club finished 4-0 to start all-star play. "We're maybe not the fastest team in the league, but we have very good baserunners," said Jace Moore, who credits big leads for making the team a threat on the basepaths.
"It kind of got away from us there at the end. It was a good growing experience for our kids, hopefully. If we catch that ball in right field, it's 10-4. Ten to four is a little less of a hill than 13-4," said La Porte assistant coach Stephen Bailey, who is the son of former Pasadena ISD board of education member Jack Bailey, who was present for the contest to watch his grandson Cade Bailey compete.
In all, the two teams combined to send 24 batters to home plate in the third frame, obviously eating up much of the game's time limit. The only reason a 25th batter didn't go to the plate was because of La Porte's shortstop taking a deflected ball off the third baseman's glove and gunning to first for a 5-6-3 out.
Deer Park regained the lead when John Carson reached on a shortstop's error and stole second. Luke Nunn drove Carson home with a single, before Wilson helped his own cause with a triple to the fence in center, knotting the score a second time. Moments later, a passed ball scored Wilson, before Justin Sauceda slapped a hard single.
