LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The defense attorney for Purdue murder suspect Ji Min Sha questioned whether Sha is mentally competent to stand trial, and noted that Sha plans to use Indiana's insanity defense.
Sha, 22, stabbed his roommate, 20-year-old Varun Manish Chheda, inside their first-floor McCutcheon Hall room early Oct. 5, according to prosecutors, who charged Sha with murder. "he Defendant, by counsel, serves notice ... to the Court and State of the intent to raise the defense of Insanity/Mental Disease or Defect at the time of trial ...," the filing states.
