Demopolis Lock is set to reopen after months of being closed, according to Commanding General for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lt. General Scott A. Spellmon.

DEMOPOLIS, Ala. - Demopolis Lock is set to reopen months after its forced closure, according to Lt. General Scott A. Spellmon , Commanding General for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

On Wednesday, in response to questions from U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., Lt. Gen. Spellmon confirmed repairs to the lock are happening on schedule and it is set to reopen by May 30., in which a chunk of concrete collapsed and caused significant damage. It has remained closed for emergency repairs ever since.

The Demopolis Lock and Dam is one of five in a series of locks and dams that provide a 9-foot navigation channel on the Tombigbee River used for transporting “critical cargoes” like feedstock, steel, coal, and crude oil. Before closing down in January, the lock saw around 12 transports a day and 12 million tons of cargo each year.

The forced closure of the lock has had a significantly negative impact on Alabama’s economy as exports and imports to and from Alabama’s deep-water seaport have been slowed without the dam to facilitate transportation. Sen. Britt also asked about another project, the transformational Mobile Harbor Deepening Project, which will deepen and widen the Mobile Harbor Channel to allow for larger ships and two-way traffic. Spellmon confirmed this project is also on track and will to be completed by March 30, 2025.
