Mississippi deputy sheriffs accused of beating and sexually assaulting two Black men before shooting one of them in the mouth, prompting a federal civil rights investigation, have been fired, authorities announced Tuesday.

A lawyer for a school system official accused of perjuring himself during a high-profile investigation of two school-based sexual assaults is telling jurors that her client is the fall guy for a series of administrative failings.

“Due to recent developments, including findings during our internal investigation, those deputies that were still employed by this department have all been terminated,” Bailey said at a news conference. “We understand that the alleged actions of these deputies has eroded the public’s trust department. Rest assured that we will work diligently to restore that trust.

White mobs rioted in 1962 when Meredith enrolled as the first Black student at the University of Mississippi. In 1966, Meredith set out to promote Black voting rights and prove a Black man could walk through Mississippi without fear. A white man shot and wounded him on the second day.
