Despite lackluster shooting, UTSA rolls past Trinity in season opener

The UTSA Roadrunners, in white, take on the Trinity Tigers in college basketball action at the UTSA Convocation Center on Monday, Nov. 7, 2022. UTSA won, 74-47.Through a month of preseason practices and scrimmages, UTSA almost never worked against zone defense, with coach Steve Henson prioritizing a focus on man-to-man principles.

“If we made a few more shots, I think we’d be feeling a lot better,” Henson said. “But I’d rather be celebrating a win when we defended well than a win when we just bombed in 3-pointers.” UTSA led for 18:37 of game time compared to 17:22 for Stephen F. Austin. The Lumberjacks' largest lead came in the final minute, going on a 6-0 run during the final two minutes to extend a lead that was just 60-59.Germany said the Tigers’ zone approach “caught us off guard for a little bit” and put the Roadrunners in a position that was “hard to get a feel for the game.”UTSA entered the year hoping for improved 3-point shooting after hitting just 29.

"It’s just an off night,” point guard Japhet Medor said. “I don’t see anybody on our team shooting under 40 percent that shoots the ball, so today was just an off night for us.”
