Nearly three months after Hyundai and Kia rolled out new software designed to thwart rampant auto thefts, crooks are still driving off with the vehicles at an alarming rate.LOS ANGELES – Nearly three months after a TikTok video and other social media posts exposed a security flaw in some Hyundai and Kia models, data shows thefts are still increasing.

About 8.3 million vehicles are affected by the glitch, making them relatively easy targets for thieves, the AP said.Hyundai, Kia issue recall over fire risk, tell owners of more than 571,000 vehicles to park outside “The scope of the problem is only expanding and is exponentially worse than it has been in the past,” Brian O’Hara, the police chief of Minneapolis, said in an email to the Associated Press. “We have some weeks where nearly as many Kias and Hyundais are stolen in a week as had previously been stolen in a year.”

“GLA is driving our crime,” New York Mayor Eric Adams said, using an acronym for grand larceny of autos. “Kia and Hyundai are driving the GLAs.”
