Type one diabetes, which tends to be diagnosed in younger people but can happen at any age, occurs when a person cannot produce enough of their own insulin. Instead, they must inject the hormone to stay alive. About 8% of people with diabetes in the UK have type one. But there other, rarer, types as well.
