Did we block Thanksgiving’s shine? | Opinion

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday that asks so little, to say over and again what could quite possibly be the two most important words in the English language, says our columnist Leslie Barker. In church a few Sundays ago, my pastor, Amos Disasa, called upon an unlikely source for his sermon. Because I am quite possibly the most culturally bereft person on the planet, I’d never heard of Antwan André Patton . Nor had I heard of Outkast, the name of his hip-hop duo.

I’ve thought about this a lot since his sermon, initially about people, of course: How we humans often jump to conclusions about those we know little to nothing about. How I catch myself interrupting or ignoring or flat-out not listening. How I question or criticize myself. What was left of the Halloween shelves was a mess, scattered with random candy, rejected costumes and an assortment of odd, creepy earrings and odd, creepy decorations. A few steps away and a little more organized were a dozen or so shelves laden with Christmas decorations, lights, wrapping paper and weird sweaters.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday that asks so little. It requires us to be neither scary nor generous. Nor does it demand we spend vast amounts of money on decorations or gifts or festive outfits. Instead, it only asks of us one simple favor: To say over and again what could quite possibly be the two most important words in the English language. To the stranger holding the gym door open for you. The police officer patrolling your neighborhood or even writing you a ticket.

“It warms my heart to the point of tears when I witness acts of selflessness,” says Debi Joynt. She works with volunteers at Houn’ House, the kennel owned by Greyhound Adoption League of Texas, making sure dogs are walked in all kinds of weather, any time of year. Thanksgiving reminds us of the power of that two-word phrase. So we will say it a lot that day, and maybe we will make a point to say it to the helpful and harried store clerk when we head for the mall the next day. And then we make sure we say it to the mail carrier, to the flight attendant, to your mom — who never fails to say “thank you” for dinner you brought over or for being such a wonderful daughter. And may we keep saying it.
