Edward Berger came to Deadline’s TIFF Studio to discuss the world premiere of his Netflix film, an adaptation of the classic German novel published by Erich Maria Remarque in 1929, based on his own experiences. “It deals with a character called Paul Bäumer,” Berger said. “He’s a high-school student, aged 17, who, convinced by the enthusiasm of his teachers and of the Kaiser, is sent into the First World War.

The project had gone through many cast-and-director iterations before it finally came to Berger. “My good friend producer Malte Grunert, of Amusement Park Films, called me and said, ‘What do you think of the idea of filmingin German?’ And I immediately thought, ‘God, why didn’t I think of that before?’ It was just sitting there, you know? I think it’s sold 40 million copies worldwide. Everyone knows this book — they even know about it in Indonesia.

Though the story is presented on a broad canvas with high-end production values, Berger was quick to play down suggestions that his film could be called an epic. “That’s a good term,” he said, “but in a way also we wanted to make it intimate by staying very close to the characters and to what they’re feeling.
